Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is a critical step when installing concrete flooring, as it helps to ensure that the surface is level, free of imperfections, and able to receive the coating or finishing that will be applied. The following points outline the process for surface preparation for concrete flooring:
  • Cleaning the surface: The first step is to thoroughly clean the surface of the concrete floor to remove any dirt, debris, oil, or other contaminants that may be present. This can be done using a power washer, or by scrubbing the surface with a cleaning solution and a stiff-bristled brush.
  • Checking for cracks and damage: Once the surface is clean, the next step is to check for any cracks or other damage that may be present in the concrete. These should be repaired before proceeding with any further surface preparation.
  • Grinding or shot blasting: The surface of the concrete floor is then prepared by grinding or shot blasting, which removes any remaining contaminants and creates a rough texture that allows coatings or finishes to adhere properly. Grinding or shot blasting can also help to level out any high spots or ridges that may be present in the concrete.
  • Filling low spots: After grinding or shot blasting, low spots or depressions in the concrete floor may be visible. These should be filled with a suitable patching compound or leveling compound to create a smooth and even surface.
  • Acid etching: In some cases, an acid etching process may be used to prepare the surface of the concrete floor. This involves applying an acid solution to the surface, which reacts with the concrete to create a rough texture. Acid etching can be effective for removing stubborn stains and creating a more uniform surface, but it can also be dangerous and should be carried out with care.
  • Final cleaning: After any necessary repairs or surface preparation have been completed, the surface of the concrete floor should be thoroughly cleaned again to remove any debris or dust that may have accumulated during the preparation process.
By following these steps for surface preparation, the concrete floor will be ready to receive any coatings or finishes that are desired. Proper surface preparation is essential for ensuring that the final result is strong, durable, and visually appealing.
